  2. YURTLE YURTS   These people seem to be just starting their Yurt business. There is not much on their website information wise, but they do have a lot of pictures of their product which is still being developed i guess. This business is located in the United Kingdom. They are already getting requests for overnight Yurt rental. Must be a good business to be in right now in the UK. In fact, i think a lot of people are getting interested in this type of living, because i just watched a little documentary on groups of people buying unwanted land to set-up tent and Yurt type structures to live in. Good idea.

  3. YURT TRADER   Here's the place you want to go to "Buy, Sell, or Rent a Yurt". This is really a great website and very useful too. I just discovered this recently. It specializes in Yurts but includes other shelter systems like livable Canvas Wall Tents, Tipis, & portable Toilet Systems.

    SUNTIME YURTS   These people here do not make the yurts they sell, all their yurts are imported from Mongolia. However, they do provide Yurt platforms which look really nice for a price of coarse. They have lots of very nice pictures on their website, some showing how to put up their Yurts.

    TENTWORKS   Tentworks are historic and modern tent and tipi makers based in Wales UK. They also make canvas covers for Yurts and a sample of their craftsmanship is on view in the picture at the right. I do not think they actually make Yurts, just sew canvas covers for them on a frame which you supply. But, if you are looking for a Yurt maker, ask them, because they might make Yurts or they will be able to refer you to someone who does make them.

    YURTS FOR THE MODERN NOMAD   Here is a newspaper article from the state of Oregon, Josephine County which describes a trend to use Yurts in their state park system for vacation rental units. Seems to be working out well for them. Be sure and visit the links in the box next to the article on the right side.

    “With the price of gas going nowhere but up, many RV campers are turning to Yurts as a compromise between getting away from home while bringing along home's amenities. "You still get the comforts, and they're a lot bigger than they look from the outside," says Doreen Ferguson, the parks manager for Josephine County. Built on the model made successful by Oregon State Parks, Josephine County has a growing yurt-rental system, with five available at Lake Selmac, two each at Schroeder and Indian Mary and one each at Almeda, Griffin and Whitehorse parks. Modern yurts are built on a design pioneered by the nomadic tribes of Mongolia thousands of years ago. These cylindrical dwellings are composed of a latticework wooden structure covered by fabric. Ancient nomads used yurts for the ease of construction/deconstruction, and because they are wind-resistant, lightweight and easy to carry. They've become popular with modern nomads — campers — because the construction costs are much lower, which translates into cost savings for renters. The cost for staying overnight in Josephine County Parks Yurts is $30. Oregon State Parks charges $35-41. Both use ReserveAmerica to take reservations . . .”

Not only do these people sell Yurts, but they also have a rather large Yurt rental camping business on their property located in England. Meaning, you can stay on their property and rent a Yurt to see if you like this type of living.

Another interesting story about someone who got started making something for their own use and then other people wanting them to make one for themselves also. Anyway, they have a nice video on their website which shows some of their manufacturing techniques. There are lots of good information on this site for self education about Yurt living.     HEARTHWORKS   This is a nice website with lots of information about their products. Billed as 'The Home of Tipis & Yurts'. They manufacture all their Tipis and Yurts and sell worldwide. You can either rent or buy a Yurt from them. Maybe you should consider renting first, then buy if you like sleeping in a Yurt.

    THE MONGOLIAN YURT   Billed as 'The Original Mobile Home'. This website is not selling anything. It is strictly a website explaining and promoting the Yurt as a nice shelter to live in. There are pictures, and text explaining the set-up of a Yurt, material used to make a Yurt, furnishings, and storage of a Yurt.

    “The yurt (mongolian: Ger) is the traditional dwelling of the nomads in Mongolia, as well as in the neighboring countries, over to as far as in Turkey. It is a tent-like structure made from a wooden frame and covered by wool felt. A traditional yurt is very easy to collapse and assemble again, and it can be transported on no more than three animals (horses, camels, yaks). Today it will fit nicely on a small all-terrain vehicle. The constructive principle of the mongol yurt has changed little since Genghis Khan's times. Only a few elements were adapted to newly developed or imported technology, such as carpentry. This made it possible to craft a wooden crown similar to a wheel in place of a simple piece of wood bent into a circle. Even more obvious are the use of a wooden door instead of a felt curtain, and of course the iron stove with a chimney in place of open fire. We have tried to collect as much information as possible about this beautiful dwelling type. We did so out of architectural and cultural interest, and also simply because we care. Even if the nomadic lifestyle is still very much alive in Mongolia, it will continue suffer more and more changes by modern influences, which may eventually amount to a real threat.     TURTLEBACK NOMADIC YURTS   This here seems to be a 'combo' website in that the owner both lives in a Yurt and he also sells Yurts. So he has a little 'diary' of his Yurt life plus he sells Yurts from the website. There are some nice pictures here and complete specifications of his product(s). It appears to me that this business is located close to 'Cortez, Colorado' in Montezuma County (Possibly a county without the standard building code requirements), near the four corners area of the Western US: Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona.

    THE MONGOLIAN YURT   Well, this link i am presenting here offers some information on building your own Yurt (an online PDF) and actually it is presented in a two part series with the first part available when you click on the picture at the right and the second part shown when you click here. Anyway, the author states: 'At last, complete plans for the construction of your dream Yurt' . . .

    “The traditional Yurt can be dated at least as far back as the 13th century, when Genghis Khan was turning Mongolia upside down. The original form would be quite similar to the one described below. It would have a frame of wood, with a covering of wool felt. Nomadic families would live in Yurts of various sizes long with their livestock and their few personal belongings. I would like to emphasize another aspect of the Yurt, however - the aspect that will make this space come alive. Anyone can build a Yurt, but it takes a special effort to capture the historic and sacred context of the space . . .”

    THE PORTABLE YURT   Here's a low cost housing solution for a lot of you. This site is selling a nice little portable yurt and you can order off the website. Prices range from $7900 to $11,500 each unit. Interiors appear to be quite nice.

    “These yurts are designed to be movable with relative ease. The underfloor is totally portable and covered with 3/4in tongue and groove plywood. The walls are constructed of pre-made panels that are fastened together by clamp posts at each angle point. They are insulated with either fiberglass batting or solid board polycyanurate. Exterior wall panels are available, for your choice, in two styles: With polyvinyl or brushed T1-11 siding. Either way the yurt should be maintenance free for around ten years.     KAZAKH YURT   This Yurt business based in Kazakhstan make probably the most authentic looking Yurt product i have ever seen and i have not actually seen any Yurts. They certainly make a beautiful product.

    “We offer yurts for sale from Kazakhstan with a traditional interior. The size of this hand made yurt for sale is 5.5 meter (18ft). Height of a lateral wall - 175 cm (5ft 9in). Height in the center - about 4 meter (13ft). The yurt price includes all decorative elements: felting, yurt tent band . . . All which you see at the pictures. This yurt has been used by the Disney Company for production of a movie called "Three Moons Over Milford". A YURT is a transportable collapsible dwelling that came to us from ancient times. It consists of wooden framework, covered with felt. The framework ("kerege") forms walls of the dwelling made of latticed wooden poles: "uyuk" - long wooden poles serve as a cover for the upper spherical portion of the yurt: "shanrak" is the topmost open part of the yurt, serving as an outlet for the smoke raising from the hearth, for purposes of ventilation and scanty lighting of the yurt's interior. Depending on the air temperature the yurt is covered with two if not more layers of felt. The outermost layer is coated with flat for it to be impenetrable for rain or snow. The yurt's area ranges from 3 meter to 30-40 meter. Spherical form makes it an exceedingly heat-conserving dwelling. Right in the center of the yurt one finds a hearth with a cauldron ("kazan") suspended above. The main decoration of the yurt is carpets ("tekemets") made mostly of felt. The interior looks quite bright owing to a multitude of colorful carpet-strips and ribbons manufactured of wool (by fulling), of felt (by in-laying), of such other materials by weaving, embroidery, wicker-work, etc. Simplicity and feasibility of manufacture, easy and quick assembly, use of natural materials and high transportability turn a yurt into an ideal dwelling for a nomad. When we invite other camping-inclined friends over for a party in our tent, we can comfortably fit 15-20 people in, sitting around on cushions and lounging on the bed and on the rugs on the floor . . .
